Today, October 23rd 2012, I had the opportunity to drop in on some Food Day festivities between my afternoon classes. This thing was way more than I had expected (for all involved, way to go!). Upon arrival I was welcomed with a complimentary apple of the organic variety (which I later dropped on the leaf laden sidewalk after one measly bite) and a sample of peanut butter from PB CRAVE (which was delicious- not hard feat for peanut butter). I then wove in and out of the aisle perusing the tables for snacks and food info.
Some of the highlights of my Food Day experience included:
- Learning about the Community Garden in the SE Como Neighborhood (a place a used to call home!). I was shocked that I had never noticed it before, but the lot that hosts the garden is leased for a $1 a year! Probably the only appropriated rent in the whole neighborhood.
- Signed up to volunteer with Cooking Matters in Minnesota. Cooking Matters Minnesota is a cooking education resource for low income families in Minnesota that provides workshops for cooking healthy foods on a budget. One of the tablers was fulfilling her Americorps duties with Cooking Matters, which is an option that I would like to explore further as a possible post-grad opportunity.
- Enjoyed some freekeh! It's a grain, similar to quinoa, but Bonnie- the enthusiastic freekeh tabler- claims that it is better! She credits her weight loss success and healthy lifestyle to freekeh and has some pretty yummy recipes. I bought a bag and am excited to create my very own freekeh dish!
(they must have been good...)
